Noted Ultrasound Expert Cited for Extensive Publication, Education and Leadership Contributions

ZONARE, a developer of next generation ultrasound technology, announced that noted ultrasound expert Jim Baun, RDMS, RVT, FSDMS, senior clinical and education manager for Mindray/ZONARE, will be recognized at the annual Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) awards dinner during its yearly conference on September 30, 2016 in Orlando. Baun was selected for the prestigious Joan Baker Pioneer Award based on his extensive contributions as an author, educator, clinician and leader in the field of medical sonography.

“We are pleased to recognize Jim’s many years of contributions to the profession of diagnostic medical sonography,” said Sheryl Goss, president, SDMS and SDMS Foundation. “With several published ultrasound texts, numerous peer-reviewed articles and a long standing history of contributions to the profession, Jim has achieved widespread recognition within the sonography community. In addition, his work as an educator over the past few decades has fostered ultrasound excellence for many students pursuing this vocation and I know they join me in congratulating Jim on receiving this award.”

The Joan Baker Pioneer Award was established in honor of the founder of SDMS. It is given on a periodic basis to those who have made significant contributions to enhancing the practice of medical ultrasound. Baun’s selection was based on a number of factors including six published textbooks with topics covering ultrasound physics, vascular, and OB/GYN ultrasound. He has lectured extensively on the practice of ultrasound in these specialties and the technologies underlying them.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen for this prestigious award,” said Baun. “There have been many colleagues who have joined me in supporting ultrasound education and advancing the profession over the decades. It is indeed humbling to be singled out by this organization of my peers.”

Baun received his early clinical ultrasound training in Toledo, Ohio and was first certified by the ARDMS in 1980. He has been a fellow member of SDMS since 1997 and received the Kenneth R. Gottesfeld Award for excellence in publishing in 1998. He is past-president of the SDMS Educational Foundation and has, over a decades-long career, served on the faculty and advisory councils of a number of public and private educational organizations. In the 1980’s, Jim was instrumental in redefining the scope of practice for vascular technologists and was the first clinician to integrate color Doppler technology into a private vascular surgery practice. In the 1990’s he led the clinical trials on the first applications of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in the United States.
